FIT WHILE YOU SIT

Staying active at your sedentary job

Being active is important for both physical and mental well-being. With many people now spending hours seated at a desk or in front of a screen for work, it can be easy to overlook the importance of movement throughout the day. Long periods of sitting can lead to poor posture, back pain, and some long-term health issues.

Incorporating small and intentional activities into your routine can make a large difference for your health. Whether at home or in an office, staying active can help to improve focus, energy levels, and overall health.

Here are some ways that you can stay active at your sedentary job:

Invest in a standing desk

      1. While this isn’t possible for all jobs, consider this or a hybrid (sit-to-stand) desk for an at-home job!

Use the stairs!

      1. If you work on an upper floor, consider taking the stairs to get a few extra steps in, rather than taking the elevator!

Go on a walk during break

      1. Whether you have a half hour or hour long break, try dedicating a few of those minutes to physical activity, such as a short walk. Bonus points for getting the walk outside!

Walk and Talk

      1. If you tend to make a lot of phone calls from any wireless device, consider walking around while you talk where possible to get in a few extra steps.

Consider Transportation

      1. Where possible, consider biking or walking to work. You can also try parking far away from the building to add in those extra steps.

Hit a Step Count

      1. If you have a mobile phone, or watch that tracks steps, try setting a step count (such as 10,000 steps/day) to encourage you to get the exercise in!

Desk stretches

      1. During short breaks, consider doing small exercises and stretches to keep you moving when you have to sit for long periods of time. For ideas on exercises or stretches, here are two pages that give a variety of exercises you can try!
